Facts about Vienna

These are the hard facts. Searching for Vienna e.g. in the CIA World Fact book this does not show any information about the capital of Austria. While we learn that there are more than 8 million people living in Austria, and the median age is 42,2 years there is no information about Vienna itself. Spending a look into Wikipedia we learn that more than a quarter of Austrians population is living within the city area of Vienna. That is more than 1.7 million people.

Major tourist attractions are amongst others the imperial palaces of the Hofburg and Schönbrunn, as well as the ferry wheel (“Riesenrad”) in the Prater. Tourists often look for cultural highlights as the Staatsoper (opera house), the Burgtheater, and the Lipizzaner horses at the spanische Hofreitschule. In the evening excursions to Vienna’s Heurigen district Döbling are popular not only amongst tourists but also Viennese people like to have nice evening with their friends and some good wines.

To give you more facts about the capital of Austria: Vienna is composed of 23 districts, all of them having their own name as well they are numbered for the sake of convenience. These districts are sort of subdivisions of the city administration. As a practical matter the separate administrative buildings for each district decentralize the municipal administration to some degree. But these districts cannot be compared with administrative bodies with explicit powers.

In its origins Vienna was a small village founded by Celtic people, which was then turned into a Roman military camp under the name Vindobona. This site was turned into an important trading place in the 11th century. It then became the capital of first the Babenberg dynasty followed by the Austrian Habsburg family. During the 19th century it became one of Europeans biggest towns.

Vienna today attracts a lot of tourists, living in apartments as offered by a lot of private landlords. Theses apartments can easily be found by entering the phrase “apartments Vienna” in any search engine. We recommend the apartment of family Duschel, which are situated close to the Vienna opera house, thus making it possible to reach the most important sights by foot.
